I’m going to let you in on a secret: reading the Bible in its original languages is not difficult. That was exactly what I wanted-to read Greek as naturally and quickly as English -and thus began my lifelong love affair with this most beautiful language. So I selected some passages -the Lord’s Prayer, for example, and Psalm 23-that were well-known to me and began learning them one verse at a time.
The teachers were not well-trained in the subject matter, but were forced to teach it because these particular programs mandated that students complete an entire year’s worth of instruction before moving on to another level…which meant that my first year there was spent learning very basic vocabulary words like “dog” and “cat.” We also did some grammar review, but nothing more advanced than simple sentence structure patterns such as nouns being placed after verbs (“I give you”). The school used a curriculum called Horizons, which was published by the Assemblies of God (AG) church denomination and required us to buy several books from them at prices far above those found elsewhere on Amazon or other online booksellers. My only previous experience with Greek had been in high school where I took two years of classes at a small Christian school. The result is a cleaner version of an older printed translation (the 1776 version), which allows students of biblical languages to focus more on what they’re reading instead of trying to figure out where each sentence begins and ends. Unlike other editions that have no verse breaks or period markers but still retain some punctuation, our translation has none at all. That’s why we’ve stripped out all of the unnecessary formatting in this edition of the interlinear New Testament. But when you’re learning Greek or Hebrew and need to read the original languages, you’ll find that most English translations-even those without verse breaks-have been heavily modified to include punctuation and other formatting cues. When it comes to understanding the Bible, punctuation can be a big help. This interlinear has the punctuation stripped out, so there are no periods, commas, or verse breaks. A word’s meaning is derived from its usage in context, which gives greater insight into understanding any given passage of Scripture. In this way, a word can be looked up by its number in the Greek or Hebrew texts. The Interlinear Bible is keyed to the Greek and Hebrew text using Strong’s Concordance.
